THE MECHANICS OF DREAM EVAPORATION

GENERATIVE INSTALLATION

A robotic arm actively transcribes the dream narratives created by a random text generator. But during the process, upon contact with light, the ink in which these stories are written down gradually disappears, just like our dreams that evaporate when we wake up. The paper, once again blank, is reinserted in a loop into the machine, in an archiving process both utopian and useless.

One of the most futile undertakings may be the attempt to remember a dream that vanishes with the daylight. Véronique Béland’s Mécanique d’évaporation des rêves is about just such a utopian endeavour. By equipping a machine with a random text generator, she gives it the ability to dream, while a device equipped with a pencil hastens to record the dreams on a roll of paper. The process makes a great deal of noise as the machine is activated, as if the machine was aware of the changeability of its writings. This is because the ink used is “sympathetic”, which is to say that it erases itself as the paper tape returns to its inking point. The action of the mechanical device conjuring the magic is also a perfect illustration of the random-access memory with which we have endowed machines, and which is erased every time they are restarted. This is not the case for humans, except for the repressed dreams that many governments around the world would like to never see surface. When the forgetting of our dreams becomes collective, it takes on a whole new dimension.

ロボットアームが、ランダムテキストジェネレーターによって作られた夢の物語を能動的に書き写す。しかし、その過程で光に触れると、私たちの夢が目覚めたときに蒸発するように、これらの物語が書き込まれたインクが徐々に消えていく。再び白紙に戻った紙は、ユートピア的でありながら無用なアーカイブのプロセスとして、再び機械に挿入されるのです。

最も無駄な仕事のひとつは、日没とともに消えてしまう夢を思い出そうとすることだろう。ヴェロニク・ベランドの「Mécanique d'évaporation des rêves」は、まさにそのようなユートピア的な試みについての作品である。ランダムテキストジェネレーターを搭載した機械に夢を見る能力を与え、鉛筆を搭載した機械がその夢をロール紙に急いで記録していく。その際、機械は自分の書いたものが変化することを意識しているのか、大きな音を立てて作動する。これは、使用されているインクが「共感性」、つまり紙テープがインクを塗った地点に戻ると勝手に消えてしまうからだ。機械が魔法をかけるということは、機械に搭載されたランダムアクセスメモリが、再起動するたびに消去されることを如実に示している。ただし、世界中の多くの政府が決して表面化させたくないと願っている、抑圧された夢は別である。夢の忘却が集団化したとき、それはまったく新しい次元に入るのだ。
